The Teotihuacan Aztec Pyramids

The city and the archaeological site are located approximately 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Mexico City. The Aztec named, Teotihuacan, some say means “birthplace of the gods”, or “place where gods were born”.  The broad central avenue, called “Avenue of the Dead” is flanked by impressive ceremonial architecture, including the immense Pyramid of the Sun (third largest in the World after the Great Pyramid of Cholula and the Great Pyramid of Giza). Along the Avenue of the Dead are many smaller talud-tablero platforms. The Aztecs believed they were tombs, inspiring the name of the avenue.  The earliest buildings date to about 200 BC, with major monuments continuously under construction until about 250 AD. The largest pyramid, the Pyramid of the Sun, was completed by AD 100 and the interior of the Pyramid has never been fully excavated.
