The Great Wall of China

5,000 kmlong, the wall was started some 2,000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty. Built to keep invaders out, it took hundreds of thousands of workers, many of whom remain buried inside the massive wall. An estimated 180 million cubic metres of earth was used to form the core of the original wall. Then, during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), 60 million cubic metres of stone and brick were added.
