Elephant Family, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Rarely found outside reserves because of ongoing poaching, the elephant population inside the Hwange is doing quite well. (Although rhinos have not been spotted here for years.) Elephants are highly social and intelligent animals with family units usually consisting of – 9 to 11 females and their calves of which they are extremely protective. This small family unit had only four adults that were out-numbered by their young offspring. Approaching the water hole cautiously but at the same time aggressively, almost to say don’t mess with me, the adults keep a careful eye on the surrounding area watching for lions that may be nearby.
