The Nile

P.EGYPT-78

Floating Down The Nile River, Egypt

The Nile River is the longest river in the world and has been providing life to the vast Nile basin for hundreds of thousands of years. From its major source, Lake Victoria in east central Africa, the white Nile flows through Uganda and into Sudan where it meets the Blue Nile at Khartoum in the Ethiopian highlands. The river continues to flow northwards into Egypt, where the lush river banks are a stark contrast to the arid desert it flows through, and then finally on to the Mediterranean Sea – a distance of 5,584 km (3,470 mi). From its remotest headstream, the Ruvyironza River in Burundi, the river is 6,671 km (4,145 mi) long.
