Cheetah, Masai Mara, Kenya
A cheetah’s life span in good surroundings is approximately 10 to 12 years, but the population in the Masai Mara is rapidly going down. In the year 2000 there was an estimated 60 cheetahs found inside the reserve and the surrounding ranches. In just two years the population dropped to only 40 individuals, a decline of more than 30%. This decline is largely due to injuries caused by lions, leopards and hyenas. But probably the most devastating and disturbing reason is harassment from tourists disrupting their hunting.
