Crowned Crane

P.S.A.-0110

Grey Crowned Crane, South Africa

One of Africa’s most spectacular birds and maybe the world’s most beautiful crane. The crowned crane is the most primitive species of crane and dates back to the Eocene period. Eleven species of crowned cranes once existed in Europe and North America. Because crowned cranes are not cold hardy, it is believed they died out in these areas as the earth cooled, and only survived in warmer Africa.
