Polar Bear Closs-up, Churchill, Manitoba
The great white hunters rule Cape Churchill in October and November when they migrate onto the frozen bay to stalk ringed seals. Their sense of smell is amazing. They can pick up a scent from 32 km away, and are said to be able to smell a seal under the ice. The largest land carnivore on earth (males average 350 kg to 650 kg, or 772 lb to 1433 lb), they can easily double their body weight through the winter feeding season. The largest male ever recorded was an incredible 1,002 kg – 2,209 lb – 12 ft long.
